I’m eating breakfast when my stepdad walks in, all sweaty and muscles heaving. Daddy’s a personal trainer and he works out all the time. He owns a gym. When he’s not running the business, he posts motivational videos on YouTube.

I could be imagining it, but I see a tinge of red in his cheeks.

“Get dressed, little girl. No excuses. We leave in twenty.”

“I’m glad you still think I’m little,” I huff

“You’ll always be my little girl,” Daddy growls.

“O-Okay.” I’m sure I’m imagining this: a bulge in his pants. And now it’s getting awkward and I have no idea why. He’s my stepdad, not some boy I’m crushing on.

“Get dressed,” Daddy says firmly, his voice back to normal. “No excuses.”

I hop off the stool.

Whatever. It’s only one day.

He drives me to a soccer field two miles away, where Daddy parks his big SUV next to the bleachers.
